History of Grayson County, Texas…

Grayson County Texas is a beautiful place with rolling hills and plains. Driving through the county from East to West you will see a transition in the flora and land shapes so it offers so many different beautiful landscapes in one county! Before this area was settled it was an area that many Native American groups passed through for hunting, getting materials and sometimes stopping and growing crops. There was a good sized known Native American village on the Red River above what is now Denison, Texas but over the years floods on the river washed area away and no other village sites are known.

We are lucky to have Frontier Village and Museum Inc., located in Denison, TX. This museum is a collection of many early homes from the county. The earliest in the Village is of ‘Macajah Davis’ Cabin built in the winter of 1839-1940. Please explore the information on this Museum.

The cities of Sherman and Denison’s histories are both amazing stories and they couldn’t have been more different. Both shaped by the people who settled there, the natural events that shaped them and the outside influences from the railroads and industrial development, highways and waterways.

Many communities both large and small sprang up in the county and some of these died out as things changed. People have always been moving and planting. Gaining and losing. It’s the story of America!

You can learn more about the history of Grayson County on the Texas State Historical Association website.</p?
